We
provide a valuable service to the community. The need to learn to swim
in the Lowestoft area is perhaps more important than most towns, as we
live by the sea side. Our swimming members benefit in other ways too.
They:
 |
know that
swimming is
just about the best possible way to stay
fit and healthy |
|
learn
valuable social skills through having to work together |
|
become
very
self-motivated |
 |
learn to
manage time and priorities, having to balance
school, leisure and sport |
 |
put back
into the community. Many swimmers and ex-swimmers volunteer with us,
helping bring on the next generation of swimmers |
 |
train and
learn in a friendly, safe and supportive environment |
Lowestoft and Oulton Broad Swimming Club was formed in 2005 by an
amalgamation of two successful competitive swimming clubs in Waveney.
“Lowestoft Swimming Club” &
“Oulton Broad Swimming Club”.
They had each been successful teaching and coaching centres in their
own right prior to
the
amalgamation and had aspirations to be even more
successful. In May 2006, in partnership with Sport England and Waveney
District Council, the club employed it’s first full time Head
Coach, Simon Pickering. Apart from the Head Coach, the club functions
on a substantial base of volunteers (approximately 80) and without
them, it would simply cease to exist.
The club essentially is competitive in nature but with the wish to
cater for all. It has a structure in place to teach young swimmers how
to swim, to provide a means of exercise and keep-fit whilst
incorporating enjoyable and social activities. The club also boasts a
centre for high performance swimming with the top squad swimming in
excess of 13 hours per week. The club is based at Waveney
Sports & Leisure Centre but also utilises other local pools
including Ashley School and Gisleham School.
All our coaches are ASA qualified, Insured and CRB checked. Members are
also insured through the ASA. The club is managed by a committee of 25
elected members, a Management board and the Head Coach. Click

out more about how we run ourselves.
The club is self financing, receiving no direct monetary support from
the District Council or other agencies. We do however, enjoy a close
and positive relationship with the local authority, Waveney District
Council. This is reflected in use of the facilities they manage and the
link between their Learn to Swim Scheme and our training scheme which
takes swimmers to the next level. The revenue to run our Coaching
Scheme is generated by (i) monthly fees from members, (ii) annual
membership subscription of members, (iii) fundraising activities
including a club shop and (iv)
grants
and sponsorship, for specific
projects and activities.
As of Summer 2007, we have started running a variety of swimmer-development
courses and workshops over the summer holiday period. This will be a great
boost to your child's skills and will help keep them out of mischief!!!
